Stop Ruining Your Activewear: The Right Way to Wash Gym Clothes and Destroy Odors

Athleisure and gym clothes are expensive investments. These garments are made from high-tech synthetic fabrics like spandex, polyester, and nylon, designed to wick sweat away from your body. However, these same synthetic fibers are notorious for trapping body oils, bacteria, and stubborn odors. If your workout gear still smells funky right out of the washing machine, or if your favorite leggings have lost their stretch, your laundry routine is the culprit.

The Deadly Sins of Washing Activewear

  • Sin 1: Using Fabric Softener. This is the #1 rule! Fabric softeners coat fabrics in a waxy residue. On regular clothes, this feels soft. On activewear, this wax clogs the pores of the synthetic fibers, trapping the sweat and bacteria inside permanently, and completely destroying the moisture-wicking technology.

  • Sin 2: High Heat. High heat in the washer or the dryer will melt the elastic fibers (Elastane/Spandex), causing your clothes to shrink, pill, and lose their shape.

The Professional Athletic Wash Routine

  1. Air Them Out: Never throw damp, sweaty gym clothes directly into a dark laundry hamper. Hang them over the edge of the basket to dry first to prevent mildew.

  2. Turn Inside Out: The bacteria and dead skin cells are on the inside of your clothes. Turn them inside out so the detergent can target the dirtiest areas.

  3. Cold Water & Powerful Enzymes: Wash on a cold, gentle cycle. Use a high-quality, enzyme-based laundry pod that breaks down proteins and sweat without needing hot water.

  4. Air Dry Only: Lay your activewear flat to dry or hang them up. Keep them out of the dryer!
